I've been at most of the Dublin gigs since, I dunno, 2005 (do we go back that far?). I think Delo are the new U2, as in, they are as good as U2 were when they brought out Boy - War. They're on the cusp of the Big Time. At the Ambassador & Academy gigs Delo played like they were gonna smash the Irish music scene apart, which they did so, easily. Best thing out of Ireland in years & deserve to be as big as the world. That said....
Now that they've sold out such a big gig, that go-mental seems to have died down a little. It's obviously gonna be harder to get that intensity across to such a big crowd/ venue compared to, say, Whelans, where you're almost part of the Idle Conversation, but for at least the first hour on Saturday there was something missing. I started to go mental for Leave It On (the last few bars are nice & intense) & people were looking at me as though I had 2 heads, in fact, they were a bit pizzed off that I was going for it (ye know, "watch-my-drinkers"). Maybe it's old age? Do fans mellow after 3 records? I dunno, but I had a brief nostalic nod to Whelans. That said......
When the crowd did finally get up for it it was top notch. The new songs fit seamlessly into a brilliant set. I missed Idle Conversation (& told them so when they accidentally mingled with fans on the stairwell!) but I guess they're right to leave it out, they'll only ruin it for themselves if they overplay it & we'll all love it all the more when we do hear it again.
Overall, they are still the best live band & best Irish band around, just gonna get harder the bigger they get. Hopefully we'll get to see them in the Phoenix Park at one of the gigs this Summer.
